Day 25 of Countdown to Oliver: Birth Plan

Today (or yesterday, rather) was about the birth plan. The husband and I have already discussed and decided on how we want things to play out, but it was time to put in it on paper and get my OB and hospital up to speed.

With our first, we just played it by ear, no birth plan, and let the birth process go how it went, which worked well. I was in labor for about 4 hours, pushed for 10-15 minutes and there was our beautiful daughter. No ridiculous horror story needed. We’re hoping to take the same approach with the birth process this time and let things happen as naturally as possible.

I do, however, have a couple different requests that go against the general norm for after the baby is born, which is why I decided to make a birth plan this time. These are two of them:

  1. Delayed cord clamping
  2. Immediate skin-to-skin for the first 1-2 hours (most routine cleaning/procedure steps can be done on the mother’s chest; the rest can be completed later)–this can also be referred to as “kangaroo care”
